Why Visit Munich in Summer
Bavaria’s capital sheds its snowy winter coat in summer and transforms into a sunny urban paradise filled with outdoor fun. Shaped along the Isar River, this city has an abundance of greenery, beautiful historical buildings, and a warm, welcoming vibe.
There’s no better place to conclude your Alpine adventure. Let’s look at what you can do in Munich after the Alps.
Explore Munich’s History
The Neues Rathaus, or New Town Hall, is an extraordinary sample of Gothic architecture. In its tower is the age-old Glockenspiel (mechanical clock), which re-enacts episodes from Bavarian history.
Marienplatz (the Old Town) is also home to the Munich Residenz, once the royal winter residence of the Bavarian monarchs. Nymphenburg Palace, with its magnificent landscaped gardens, is a prime example of Baroque architecture.
Odeonsplatz is also worth a visit. It’s an Italian-style square with the famous Feldherrnhalle, an open-air loggia dedicated to the Bavarian army. Just behind it lies Viscardigasse (Desserter’s Alley), where locals walked to avoid performing the Hitler salute during the Nazi regime.
Enjoy Munich’s Summer Outdoor Adventures
Englischer Garten (or English Garden) is one of the oldest and largest urban parks in the world. It has some great attractions, including the Eisbachwelle, a manmade river wave enjoyed by surfers. The Monopteros, a Greek-like temple, offers panoramic views over the park and city. There’s also a lake (Kleinhesseloher See) where you can ride on pedal boats. The park’s northern section is heavily forested and ideal for peaceful hikes.
You can walk along the Isar River. The terrain is flat and suitable for young and old. Day trips to the surrounding lakes — Tegernsee, Ammersee, and Starnberger — are just as popular. Here, you can swim, sail, or paddleboard.
Before heading out on your adventures, we recommend visiting the open-air farmer’s market (Viktualienmarkt) for some delicious fresh fruit, cheeses, and other treats.
Experience Munich’s Summer Festivals
Visitors to Munich are treated to many different summer festivals.
Hosted in Olympia Park, the Tollwood Summer Festival, one of the favorite things to do in Munich, has everything — music, theater, art, organic street foods, and more. Auer Dult is a folk festival famous for its antiques, handcrafted goods, and traditional Bavarian snacks.
Munich truly has it all — a warm welcome, mild summer days, incredible scenery and activities, and the perfect location!
