Cultural and historical places in Riyadh

The King Abdulaziz Historical Center

Built in 1999, The King Abdulaziz Historical Center is a cross-district heritage complex that has become one of the most important cultural and historical landmarks in Riyadh. It is the former compound of the Murabba Palace, and also includes the National Museum, King Abdulaziz Foundation for Research, and the King Abdulaziz Public Library among other things - as well as six municipal parks. The center is over 440,000m², and can be found in the Al-Murabba’ Quarter in the central area of Riyadh.

The National Museum Riyadh

The National Museum, situated within the King Abdulaziz Historical Center, is the place to head to first for a fascinating mix of Arabia’s ancient and modern history, culture, and art. Embark on a journey that takes you from the reign of the empires right through to current day, spread over eight exhibition halls and showcasing statues, scripts, sculptures, and more. This historical museum is Riyadh is open from 9am-8pm on Saturday-Wednesday and 2pm-10pm on Thursdays and Fridays.

Murabba Palace

Located just north of the old city of Riyadh, you will find Murabba Palace - built by King Abdul Aziz in 1936. Once the King and his family’s official home, it offers a fascinating window into what life was like for Saudi royalty and now serves as a museum within the city. Discover many interesting artefacts including the king’s personal belongings, handwritten letters and his photographs with prominent people around the world.

Masmak Fortress

The Maskmak Fortress was built in 1865 and is a clay and mudbrick fortress that resides in the al-Dirah neighbourhood. Once playing a pivotal role in the Unification of Saudi Arabia, the building now serves to show various historical artifacts of the country’s past - including works of art, weapons, and exhibits. The fortress is open any day of the week from 8am-9pm.

Diriyah Historical City

You will find the ancient city of Diriyah approximately 20km from Riyadh — and featuring over 300 years of Saudi Arabia’s culture, heritage, and history. Here you’ll find many museums and exhibition halls (such as the Daily Life Museum and Diritah Museum) to help you soak up the true sense of Saudi’s history. Other key things to see here include the UNESCO World Heritage site Al Turaif, as well as the Al-Bujairi District and the Wafi Hanifa valley, offering captivating views from the top.
